The artwork on this card was inspired by the beautiful fishing village of Staithes on the North East coast of England. Women of the village wore a Staithes bonnet, this was specific to this village and prevented the run off from fish baskets going down the women's backs as the carried the fish up the exceedingly steep slope out of the village on their heads. The bonnet was also designed to cushion their heads from the weight of the baskets. Staithes bonnets featured several folds and pleats to be effective and these are referenced on the base of the work.
