Text in Textiles hand embroidery class
Use your needle as a pen and turn a favourite piece of text into hand embroidered artwork.
Description
This Text in Textiles workshop teaches you how to use your needle as a pen and turn a favourite piece of text into beautiful hand embroidered artwork. You will learn not only how to turn writing into embroidery, but also how to build up an embroidered design that compliments the text perfectly. Discover how to develop your own style of hand embroidered writing as well as how to translate other people’s handwriting into stitch – such as that of a loved one. This workshop is for adults who would love to learn different methods of transferring writing into hand embroidery and how to build up an appropriate design in stitch to accompany it. Covering different methods of hand embroidered writing as well as a range of suitable stitches this workshop is suitable for both complete beginners and the more accomplished embroiderer alike. A beautifully curated giftbox is included for each participant so that the creativity can continue after the workshop. What to Expect Using a favourite piece of text – a quote, saying, extract from a book, letter, email, poem or similar as a starting point to create a piece of unique textile art. Firstly, you’ll learn different methods to translate writing into hand embroidery – including how to exactly copy handwriting of others, which is an excellent way to create a treasured keepsake. A range of stitches will be introduced to you that are perfect for ‘writing’ with. Next we’ll move on to developing a design that compliments the text, and learn the different techniques and stitches that are appropriate to your design. Finally, we’ll look at ways to finish the work for display. All materials are included, but please bring your piece of chosen text either on a phone, tablet or printed out. Please be aware this is a 3 hour workshop and it won’t be possible to complete a piece of work that contains a large amount of writing in this time frame. However, if the text you would like to do is longer than this I’m very happy for you to start work on it during the workshop and continue at home afterwards. I’ll ensure that you have the knowledge to continue with your work and you are able to take fabric and threads to complete the artwork. If you have any materials or an embroidery kit you would like to use, please feel free to bring them with you. Important Information The workshop runs from 10.30-1.30 at Ormesby Library. I’ll send directions of how to find the room and suggested places to park nearer to the time.

Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel your workshop place for a full refund or to switch to another workshop a fortnights notice is required. Cancellations after this date will not receive any refund either in full or part. This is because materials have been purchased and room hire paid for. Should you need to cancel your place with less than a fortnight's notice I am happy to see if anybody on the waiting list is able to buy your place - this will incur a 20% charge for refund costs and admin time. You are welcome to send someone else on your behalf with no fees payable, though I must be informed prior to the workshop to ensure that records are accurate. If I am not informed of this prior to the workshop then the substitute person unfortunately will not be able to attend.
